I made a couple updates. I fixed an minor issue with the “last service used” feature. all it does, is after you successfully make a new shortner link, the app will keep track of the shortner service-site you used and auto-selects this site by default. it wasn’t updating this information in all scenarios. that is now fixed.

the second change, is I added a shortner URL (history) window. every time you make a new link it will store the shorter link, the original link and the date / time it was created. if you right-click on the row, you can browse to the shortner link, it’s tracking page or the original link. if all of this is confusing, see my original post, here.

you can download the latest copy, here. future updates will include the password-ing and description features. I will add those features in the near future; stay tuned.

if you’re a .net developer and would like to use shortner inside your app, take a look at our .net library, here.

I haven’t written about shortner in a while. this week I finally made some accomplishments with regards to shortner. sometime last year John had upgraded the shortner platform to version 2.0. part of the upgrade included a newly revamped API (rest / json / xml based). because of this, any previous apps I had built were now invalidated.

so this week, I took some time and completely rebuilt the windows native desktop app, updated and brought the gtalk/jabber bot back online (currently invite only), and created a .DLL library for other developers to use.

hopefully in the near future we’ll create a download page on the shortner blog and etc. there you’ll find all the apps we’ve written so far: the AIR app, the Android app (check the market), the windows native app, etc. plus at some point we’ll update the wiki, with how to download and use the .DLL library; so you can use shortner with your windows-based applications.

in the past I had built a windows mobile app for shortner… I plan to update this as well. not to mention John is planning on creating the iPhone app for shortner.

the desktop app, is system tray based (next to the clock); so it stays present while you have it running, you can drag-&-drop internet shortcuts on it, drag-&-drop selected text-links, paste links from the clipboard, specify an API key (in you have one) and it actively saves your preferences.

so that’s in for now, constructive feedback and feature requests are always welcome. enjoy.

so podcamp philly 2009 (http://podcamp.me/2) is happening this upcoming weekend (october 3rd and 4th). last year I didn’t really have anything to give out to people who wanted to reach out to me online. for non business related events, business cards just don’t feel right. now I have business cards for the podcast (for guest related prospects) and I have my work business card… but in either case they have personal contact info on it. I want to be accessible, but only a select few get my mobile number or personal email addresses.

so last week it dawned upon me to order moo cards. this is something I thought of the week before podcamp philly 2008… but I wouldn’t have enough time to get them or use them; so I opted not to get any. well this year I can say I was smart enough to remember! they came yesterday and so I made a video. enjoy.

one major thing worth noting… it took 4 days before moo even shipped the order. so keep that in mind if you planning to get some moo cards for a future event. it took a full week from the time I ordered it. so keep that in mind.

a few weeks ago my 2nd monitor died. I had it for close to 7 years, so I think I can say I got a lot of use out of it. it was time to buy a new monitor. thankfully a couple weeks ago I was able to purchase the first of two (planned) replacement monitors; to replace the dead one and the existing 22-inch monitor (that’s slowly dieing as well).

with a little research and a recommendation from my friend Chris Hadley (of cuisinemadequick.com), I purchased the Dell 24-inch (2408WFP). so far I am very impressed with this monitor.

one thing I forgot to mention in the video, is that this monitor has several input options that can be used with a picture-in-picture feature. I’m not sure I will ever make use this, but it’s nice to know it has the functionality.

sometimes I feel like I’m a 3rd party participant to my life. it exists without my influence and as long as you stay in motion it’ll never stop. when this happens I find myself floating along looking on it, wondering why we exist, how we exist and trying to grasp my purpose in all of it. maybe helping in small ways has a bigger influence then trying to change the world. maybe encouraging friends has a ripple effect that’s hard to track and yet you can see the positive effect it has. knowing that I might have something do with it, gives me a momentary pause.

which leads me to this thought… that I told a friend who recently lost an ex-father-in-law. don’t have regrets. “life just is” sometimes, and we have to accept that. or we’ll repeat past mistakes. don’t live in the past. live in the now, with a productive concern for the future. but don’t forget to be responsible. and as any fellow nerdfighter would say, <del>don’t</del> never forget to be awesome!

I recently bought a new HD camera, after several years of feeling out of the modern loop. I choose the HF S100 for it’s look, specs and for the sample videos I saw online. Considering the price, Canon has packed an amazing amount of features into this camera.

I’ve had the camera for less than a week and I’m really enjoying the device. It’s a pleasure to work with, however the glow of new toy hasn’t faded. Once I have an opportunity to use it in a more practical way… I’m sure I will have more feedback.

Okay, so let’s break the camera down…

The battery that comes with the camera says 99 minutes when fully charged in video mode. Considering the size and weight of the battery, I can’t complain. Since, I will run out of battery before I run out of room on the memory card, I felt it was necessary to buy a spare. I choose an off-brand battery that the B&H website recommended as an accessory. So far the PEARSTONE battery seems like it will do the job, but I found it less elegant then the Canon batteries for the following reasons: 1. the spare battery does not communicate with the camera like the Canon batteries do. instead the PEARSTONE has 4 led lights. this isn’t a huge issue, but it leads me to complaint… 2. there is no indicator that the battery is charging. 3. this isn’t really a complaint, but worth noting. the battery cannot be charged through the camera, it has to be directly plugged into the power supply that comes with the camera.

The memory card doesn’t come with the camera. This isn’t an complaint, compared to it’s counter part (the S10; $300 more) the S100 doesn’t come with 32GBs on board. For $300 less… I’m okay with this, because I can pick up a good Class-4 SDHC card for around $100-$130. If you can find a name brand Class-6 card buy it. A class-6 shouldn’t cost more than $130. Most of the SDHC cards will have a C logo with their class-number inside the C-logo. If the card meets or exceeds a certain class rating, they will want to advertise it. Don’t be swayed by names like “ultra”, “fast”, “uber awesome”; look for the class-number logo printed on the front of the card. For this camera only use Class-4 and above.

The common complaints have been this camera lacks a view finder. For me this isn’t a problem. I can’t remember the last time I used the viewfinder. I always use the flip-out LCD panel. So, this isn’t a loss for me. The second complaint has been that it rattles when you walk or shake it. I have a feeling this has to do with optical stabilizer. But again, this isn’t a huge loss because when I’m not holding the camera, it will be stashed away in it’s camera bag.

The video modes for this camera are: MXP, FXP, XP+, SP and LP. Basically, all that changes is the bit-rate, quality, and amount of your recording time. If you purchased a 32GB card like I did… the MXP mode (24mbs) will give you 3 hours. For me that’s plenty of time. All of the modes, record at 1920×1080 (60 frames per second; interlaced). The (24 and 30 frame progressive) cinema modes do not record as the advertised frame rates. They are just emulation modes. Everything still records at 60 frames per seconds; interlaced. However, I hear that with the cinema modes you get an accurate look, feel and exposure settings.

The hot shoe is not a full sized slot. It’s a mini-hot shoe. Thankfully I picked up a handle/video bracket for $15; months before I owned this camera. With this bracket I can attach two full-sized hot-shoe enabled accessories. Plus, the handle helps me hold the camera in different positions. Most people slip their hand into the strap. I don’t like holding camera in this manner. I prefer to support the camera from the bottom in a lifting position verse holding it like a pitch fork. I orignally bought this accessory so I could add a video light to my Flip Mino HD. It turns out I have found more value with the use of the handle, because it helps me stabilize the camera position. More so with the Canon verse the Flip.

The adapter ring is a feature you should find on any camera in the $1,000+ price range. This is something I had on my 3-chip prosumer camera and it’s something I’m am happy to find on this device. Canon likes to standardize the diameter widths for their cameras. Since the lens diameter is 58mm, I can use any lenses that the GL2 can and now I have a much wider selection of professional lenses I can use.

The ports on this camera… well there’s a bunch. This is always the sign of a good thing. The first thing to point out is that the port-covers are not flimsy. Here’s what I found… A cupboard port for the component, mini-usb and HDMI connectors. The A/V port for composite and L/R phono connector-cord. The A/V port can also double as the headphone jack (you can configure this the in the menu interface). An external mic connector. I am most happy about this, now I can film in HD with my wireless mic pack. *does the dance of a/v nerd joy* Last, is the power jack.

The menu interface isn’t so bad. I have found on my cameras (regardless of price) that this is where most of them fail. However the menu/features interface on the camera is quite good and not ugly. Don’t get me wrong, this interface is not pretty either, but it’s very functional and easy to understand after a couple minutes of use. The camera has a joystick on the flip-out screen. With some simple (up, down, left, right) movements you can get around the menus. The joystick also doubles as a push button. My last “good” camera was the Sony TRV-950 and was one of the first models to use a touch-screen interface. That is one thing that Sony has excelled at… because they integrated some nice cadillac features like spot mode and spot focus (as I mentioned in the video above). Again, something I miss that this camera doesn’t offer, but not a show stopper.

The recording modes… there are 3; dual, video and photo. Let me first address, if you’re looking for a digital photo camera that does video… this is camera should not be your buying choice. This device is a video camera first and a photo camera 2nd.. or maybe 3rd. It’s nice you can take pictures… especially when you consider the professional 58mm lenses you can add and the optical image stabilization the camera offers. But let’s get back on track… the recording modes… I think photo and video explain themselves. The dual mode let’s you take pictures while you film. It however does lack all the controls that you get when you’re in the photo mode. But again, this is a video camera first and a photo camera last.

The recording format is AVCHD. I was put off by this for all of 2 minutes. On the PC (the Windows world) it’s rather easy to adapt. Adobe Premiere (elements and pro), Vegas Video 9 …work with this format without a sweat. However I hear it’s a bit of a troublesome process for Mac users (you have to convert your files to a format that Final Cut and iMovie will accept before you can edit). In both cases (Windows and Mac) software is provided that lets you extract the video files from the camera. Don’t go looking for the files raw on the SDHC card. Use software or one of the video editing apps to do this for you. Once you have the files, don’t be put off if you run the file directly and it stutters. Most computers will not playback this format easily. Again, this is best dealt with using the software that Canon provides or use video editing apps that are optimized to playback large files.

The things that are neat about this camera and that are worth mentioning. Apparently, you can buy a USB DVD burner accessory to create DVDs directly from the camera. I think that’s neat, but not a compelling reason for me to personally want this camera. You can also split video files, crop pictures and etc. But again, I think of this as a video camera first and everything is less important. So don’t expect much information or interest (from me) in regards to burning DVDs from the camera and so on.

The accessories I bought… 4 filters, a spare battery (as mentioned), a .5x wide angle lens, 32GBs and a camera case. Since there are few stores locally around here that carry… well… just about anything useful for A/V nerds like myself… I went on a hunt for a camera case. I ended up at the local MicroCenter. The selection was pricey and poor… but with a little luck I found a perfect case for the video camera. I bought a case logic camera bag (that’s meant for SLRs with long lenses) that looks more like a mini backpack rather then a camera bag. Since the video camera is about the shape and size of most SLR lenses it fight perfect into the lens well of the case.

In summary, I’m glad I bought this camera. I’m sure in a few weeks it will be replaced by a much sexier model, but for now it’s my new toy. In time I’m sure I will find some things to dislike. So far this camera seems pretty solid and I think a very good buy for it’s price. I like the design and feel of the camera and I hope I get a lot of use out of it.

I hope I have provided some useful insight. As usual what you get is my observations, thoughts and rambling. =)

Today I was over my step brothers place, helping him fix his computer again. After a lot of cleaning up, I finally discovered the issue, then it blue screened; which confirmed my belief. We ended up going over to a local computer store (the only one left in the area for miles) called MicroCenter.

Recently, I have been struggling with my keyboard and mouse. The mouse hasn’t been tracking as well as I like, and the keyboard has not been keeping up with me as I type. My tweets, IMs and emails seemed to be missing letters and words a lot of as late. I found I had to press the keys harder in order to get the input.

So before we left the store, I decided to take a quick look at the keyboard selection. What I had before was this model: the Wireless Desktop Optical Elite and I ended up replacing it today with this model: the Wireless Laser Desktop 6000.

I made a quick comparison review on the difference between the keyboards and I discussed what I liked and didn’t like.

Below you can also see the pictures I took of the differences in size and shape.

Two points I didn’t mention in the video, that I think are worth noting. The old keyboard / mouse set was wireless (via RF) and the mouse was optical/infrared. The new keyboard / mouse set uses bluetooth and the mouse is optical/laser.

anyhow, the reason I’m writing this post, was to mention I haven’t forgotten about you. I will be releasing an update soon. I just need to find some time to work on the enhancements I want to make… which will include some of the following…

user preference: control thumb/finger scrolling speed (mainly for VGA users)

user preference: blocking users

user preference: languages filtering

user preference: creative commons default

timeline: show YouTube video entries; but disabling playback (since most phones do not support this)

timeline: improved “< prev" and "next >” intelligence

timeline: user agent support

description box support (read and submit)

posting: make private posts

posting: mark “for public”

posting: update twitter on post

posting: specify creative commons options

better threading options; so you the user can be impatient while it does things in the background

new video notifications (just like your phone tells you have new voicemail)

download and upload percentages

…and that’s just a partial list… there’s way more on the list, including some minor bugfixes… and some language pack updates.

anyhow, don’t loose hope. I will make the updates, I promise, all in do time.

I don’t know about you, but I often find myself needing to resize images or video. most of the time I want to keep the aspect ratio. my problem is I generally only know one of the dimensions that I want to resize too and I not the other.

to figure out the other corresponding dimension I always load up photoshop, create a blank new file, set the canvas to the original dimensions and then I resize the image to get the corresponding value.

well I finally got tired of doing this just to find out what the corresponding number is. so tonight I built a quick and dirty systray app called “ratiocalc”. using this application you define your starting dimensions, then specify either the new height or width and it will tell you the corresponding value based on the initial dimensions.

that’s it, quick and simple. the application only runs in windows and is a .net 2.0 application. you can download it… but you use it at your own risk. I do not take any responsibility in how you use this app. you agree to those terms by downloading it here.

today I realized I never released transLock. sometime last year; maybe in 2007… I created a very basic windows lock/screensaver utility.

where I work, if security (sees your workstation or laptop unlocked) they’ll prove their point. sometimes it’s a harmless thing like sending email from your computer and sometimes it’s not.

at times I want the option of locking down / securing my laptop (so I can walk away without concern) while I can still see incoming email, monitoring systems and so on. at another company I used to use a util that would auto-lock my workstation when the bluetooth signal was weak or off on my mobile phone. but that was never a good solution for me, cause I could still be 150 feet away (in the bathroom or cafe) and my workstation was still unlocked.

getting back to my point, I grew for a need to have my workstation locked up at times, while I could still monitor what was going on. so I built transLock. it’s a windows systray utility that says hidden until you activate it. when activated, it locks up your screen (while staying opaque; which is user configurable) and will not go away until you enter the correct password. you cannot ctrl-alt-delete your way out of it, all you can to do enter the correct password, shutdown or cancel (back to entering the password).

it’s not perfect, you can still create some trouble through alt-tab. but I thought I’d release it to anyone who wants to try it out.

disclaimer: use at your own risk. this is not a security deterrent or replacement for the OSes windows lock function. if you download this utility you do so on your own accord and I am not responsible for how you use it. if you agree to this disclaimer you can download the application here.

there is no auto-update (check for updates) system in this app. so I recommend you come back to this blog for updates. the password is stored on the computer and in a proprietary encryption. the application requires .net 2.0 and is self contained. no installer is required. if you wish to have transLock run on startup, you’ll need to create a shortcut and place it in your startup folder.

NOTE: a VERY important thing to note. out-of-the-box the first-run password is the current date in the following format: YYYYMMDD …example: so if today’s date was: January 21st, 2009, the password would be: 20090121 …make sure after you unlock to set your password to something else.

that’s it. use transLock at your own risk; see the disclaimer above for details. enjoy.

don’t get too excited. this release is just 2 bug fixes and 1 minor new feature.

I fixed the issue where you respond to a video than when you want to create a new one; it now properly clears out the previous referring video-id. I also fixed the previous / next issue when you are browsing inside a thread. this was previously not working correctly and keeping you stuck on the first 20 videos; it’s now fixed. the last feature just highlights the video-item when you press-down on the thumbnail. I added this to help you know which video you are about to enable options for.

that was it, there are new features on their way, when I find the time and energy to implement and test them.

as usual you contact me here if you run into errors or any issues.

if you already have the application installed it will prompt you to update. if not, you can go into options and check update under the misc tab. if you haven’t installed mSeesmic yet you can start by browsing the following URL on your phone: http://m.mseesmic.net

mSeesmic is a Compact Framework 2.0 .net application for Windows Mobile. it is designed for the touch/stylus PDA phones.

I recommend you save the executable to it’s own folder, and preferably to the external memory card of you have the room. in the near future I will create a self-contained CAB installer. for now, just download and save the application to it’s own folder and location. from there it will configure itself, download and maintain any temp files inside the folder.

that is it for now. as usual please contact me for any bug you find, and if you happen to see a review of the application or review it yourself, please leave a link to your review here.

thanks and enjoy.

identity is a hard thing to grasp and embrace at times. our “sense of being” constantly changes; in our mind, in the way others perceive us and how we represent ourselves to the world. it’s an ongoing struggle and changes with our mood, our level of confidence and our state of mind.

identity is an ongoing and ever changing relationship that we wrestle with. questioning ones ambitions is normal. it’s natural to want to change and to desire improvement in yourself. when we are balanced we will show the world, when we are out of sync we do our best to hide our insecurities and not show the doubt in our sense of worth.

identity is an emotional state of mind and changes with how we see ourselves in the world. what is my role? in life? right now? what is my purpose? why am I here? why was I there? why am I asking myself these questions? am I truly alone? is love a fleeting moment? or a passing thought? will I truly be happy? am I happy now? these are just some of the questions I’m sure you’ve thought of over time. they are all relevant and good questions. getting a sense of yourself is alright, it’s healthy and it’s necessary.

through growth and life experience we find ourselves defining who we want to be, who we want to be like and who we think we should be. as you grow and as you achieve you will make life defining choices. you will begin to define your sense of worth, your role in the world and your desires for change.

growth is inevitable and futile to think otherwise. we grow, we change, we move forward even when we feel we’re moving backwards. our identity is part of our growth. it’s human to desire, it’s human to change and our sense of worth is vital and important.

identity is has many roles, plays many parts in our life and has many faces. it permeates through our soul to our skin. have confidence in your existence. if you doubt your sense of worth, go into the world and experience it first hand. interact with it directly and you will desire change, you will make decisions and you will define your sense of being and your place at large.

identity is a relationship we cannot avoid, it shadows us at every turn and at times stares us in the face. keep your balance, reflect on the direction you’re taking. take action on your desires and you will maintain balance and your decisions will help you keep the tone and a sense of your identity.

your sense of worth is evaluated by your confidence, life experience and achievements. if you have doubts, go do something about it. that in itself is the first step in the process. you don’t have to change to improve your sense of worth, but you must have the desire. you define your worth by your actions, but sense of being is defined by your potential.

you have the potential, you are worth something to others. have confidence that you can, than you will know your purpose and you will recognize your identity.

today I built a quick and dirty little windows app, I call “seesTray”. I know the name is horrid, get over it.

anyhow, it’s basically a seesmic (inbox) notifier. while the app is running it will sign-in to seesmic and grab the list of videos in your inbox. if it sees any changes, it will let you know.

you can grab a copy of it here.

to install unzip the contents of the zip-file into it’s own folder. you need to have .net 2.0 framework already installed.

note it’s just a quick little app I built today on lunch. later on, (if there’s a strong desire for it), I’ll build an installer and whatnot. for now, of you want it to launch on startup, just create a shortcut and drop it into your startup folder in your start menu.

update I made a bunch of little improvements and a few small changes. so it’s at version 1.0.0.4 now. no biggie, if you already installed it, it will prompt you to download the update the next time you run it.

I finally completed a very large and tedious coding effort for the newest feature to the application. I made a handful of minor improvements, and added the following features:

d-pad scrolling - you can now scroll the timeline/thread (just like you can with your fingers) using the navigation . d-pad on your phone.

multi-language support - this feature let’s you choose which language you want to operate the application in. however I must point out that the translations are rough first-drafts and have yet to be optimized for application UI. in time newer language packs will become available. if there’s a language you would like to see suported that is not in the list and you offering to help translate, please contact me. also if any of the exisitng language packs (aside from english) that need tweaking and you can help, please contact me.

if you already have the application installed it will prompt you to update. if not, you can go into options and check update under the misc tab. if you haven’t installed mSeesmic yet you can start by browsing the following URL on your phone: http://m.mseesmic.net

mSeesmic is a Compact Framework 2.0 .net application for Windows Mobile. it is designed for the touch/stylus PDA phones.

I recommend you save the executable to it’s own folder, and preferably to the external memory card of you have the room. in the near future I will create a self-contained CAB installer. for now, just download and save the application to it’s own folder and location. from there it will configure itself, download and maintain any temp files inside the folder.

that is it for now. as usual please contact me for any bug you find, and if you happen to see a review of the application or review it yourself, please leave a link to your review here.

thanks again and enjoy.

phases. we go through many of these in our lifetime. the best analogous is to think of them like early iMacs. they come in many flavors, styles, and variations. they also reach into many areas of our lives and we cycle through them often. the “phase” cycle varies; some take moments and others can last for years; if not forever. but what they are most, is an important aspect of our lives. take note of the phases in your life. you’re sure to repeat them and quickly dismiss them (again) after they have passed. as we grow, our interests change and as we get older we see the phases repeat in our own lives as well as others around us; online and offline.

phases are most apparent when we are forced to make “life altering” changes; even against our better judgment and interests. don’t fear the change, don’t fear the phase. phases are temporary and they will pass. they always have an end and you’re in control. they’re just a life-cycle that you wield with your mind. as your interests and needs change, you will end one phase and begin another.

phases can also be influenced externally. as an example; apple is a company that knows this best. they prey on your “short term” fads and introduce new product variations accordingly. as a result, their phase becomes something you anticipate and every fiscal quarter you find yourself hungering for a slight variation of your favorite apple product; if not all of them.

phases come in many flavors, in many styles and with varying intensities. they effect all aspects of our lives, in love and relationships, at home, at work, in our doubts, our wants and our needs. they effect us from the surface down to our core. they motivate us to move forward and they give us hope. they help us define our goals and priorities. they are important, they are human and they are vital.

life is rapid and the faster you run, the quicker you will enter one phase and exit another. look forward to the change, look forward to a new phase. don’t fear the phase, but be mindful of the change. if you don’t learn from the phase (you just left behind), you are sure to repeat it.

we cycle through life, we go through phases and as you learn, you grow. growth is a phase and the more you grow the less you will repeat mistakes. everything comes to end and phases are no different.

phases are vital, they are part of our life and they are the doors you enter, to get from one place to another. but you must be prepared. you can’t enter the next phase without the proper key. don’t rush yourself. entering the next phase is not what counts, it’s just the goal. what you learn and how you grow that is key to the next level, the next door and the next phase.

be mindful of change in your life, be mindful of the path you’re on and you’ll know when you’re ready for the next phase of life.

alright, I have been getting a little bit of feedback indirectly regarding mSeesmic and that it’s not running on a handful of Windows Mobile 5.0 phones.

to resolve this, you’ll need the .net compact framework 2.0 installed your phone. you can get the installer for it here. You’ll need to run this from a windows desktop/laptop with your phone connected via ActiveSync.

according to the supported operating systems this installation includes WIndows Mobile 2003 SE as well. If anyone is willing to test that, I would like to know the success of this. technically if you can get .net CF 2.0 installed it should work just fine.

in the dictionary “balance” is described as “a state of equilibrium; mental steadiness or emotional stability”. in life we seek balance, with family, with work, in our hobbies and even online. balance is the backbone to many things.

it’s important and vital. it helps us make decisions, it allows us to set boundaries. it allows us to define our needs and wants. choose wisely and you will glide through the good and bad times. choose unwisely and you will suffer for the weight of your decisions.

life is the tightrope and balance tugs us to the side anticipating our fall. maintaining balance is something we do everyday even if we’re not aware of it. it’s okay to have wants and desires, and at times it’s okay to be a bit selfish and concerned for yourself. the best balance you can maintain in life is with an equal spread of your needs, wants and desires. but don’t forget the rest of the world, be charitable, be giving and be mindful of your balance. be mindful of the relationships you have. you can effect the balance of others, just as they can influence yours.

we are continually maintaining a balance and you will know when you’re not, because you will suffer for it eventually. balance is a give and take relationship. to maintain relationships you have to invest. invest in others and you’ll regain some balance.

balance comes in many forms, has many levels and effects everything. we influence each other, we effect each others balance. invest in the relationships you have in life, and you will regain some balance. when others invest in you, you will maintain your balance. life is full of ebb and flow, and as individuals our balance is that “ebb and the flow”.

balance has many faces, it comes in many forms, and influences everything. it forces you to stay afloat, but we can’t do it alone. we are human, we need connection, we need relationships and we need each other. we maintain our lives through balance. and we maintain each other through balance. we influence each other. we balance each other. stay connected, stay honest, stay embraced and you will stay balanced.

I made a handful of changes today… I made enough of them and decided to not make everyone wait till the next release. I added a couple of features and fixed / tweaked a few things.

most of the new functionality is in regards to the “post a new video / reply to” screen… and they are:

multi-mode :: at times I found I wanted to create multiple posts or respond to several people in a thread (with separate videos). but I wanted to keep the title. so when multi-mode is on it won’t clear the title.

languages :: this was requested today by seesmic user @masa . he asked for the ability to specify which language he was posting. I wasn’t sending this information before, I am now. under the options menu when posting you can specify the language. later I will integrate the default behaviors of this function into language preferences. regardless you will always be able to override.

resolution :: while I was chatting with @masa he also mentioned on his HTC Diamond that the posting interface was all messed up. so I have tweaked the interface to dynamically respond better to anyone with a width of 400px or higher.

I want to specifically thank @masa for his asstistance with testing out the changes I made. I also made a few cosmetic changes to the menus and fixed one minor bug.

I plan to implement a handful of new options. multi-post was one of them, but that has been released with this subversion. anyhow here’s what I am planning to add for 1.0.0.12: user filtering, language filtering, inbox notifications, a language pack system, a help section (video and text). for the moment I am most interested in getting the language pack system working. I won’t have every language that seesmic currently supports working with the release. but the design should allow me to add and update the language packs transparently as I can get translations. if you are fluent in a language you would like to see supported please contact me.

thanks again, if you have questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. please keep in mind I only speak english.

if you haven’t been prompted already to get the update you can get it here on your phone, just go to: http://m.mSeesmic.net

as always I am looking for feedback and any information about bugs. screenshots and detailed error messages are always useful.

as I write these affirmations I have noticed a trend and strong use of certain words. “important”, “vital”, “human” and etc. one of the great things about conversation (especially when in person) is the opportunity to detect subtle visual cues. tone and presentation is often dismissed but they are “vital” and “important” to how we carry ourselves.

tone sets the balance. it allows us to set a reference point for which people can respond to. sometimes individuals react by emotion “think before you leap” and sometimes they don’t react at all. as change occurs in life you will find a need to set a tone. for yourself, for how you interact with others, online, offline, in private, with family. it’s always there, it’s abundant and like many things, it comes in many forms and has many faces. tone is about that personal connection you make with others.

as you grow, you will form many bonds, some more permanent than others. the stronger the bond the clearer your definition of tone is with that person. however the tone you set is not permanent. you must let it evolve as your relationship grows and changes.

tone is key to leadership, for guidance and anything that involves communication. the tone you use defines you, defines your conversation, defines your base for communication. tone is distinctive and vital to communication. without it, the conversation feels less human. tone becomes an extension of your personality and it’s part of what makes us “human”. find your balance. define your tone and you will be more effective.

the timeline

tip #1 if you glide your finger up over the text the timeline will scroll up. if you glide your finger down it will scroll down.

tip #2 double tap over the thumbnail (over the picture; not the reply number banner) and you will get prompted with a actions-panel. inside this panel you will find options (to play the video, to reply to the video, to open/show the thread and etc).

if you have additional questions please comment back here. or catch up with me on twitter.

life is full of balance. what we value most in life is a part of this. reflect on yourself once and a while. keep track of where you are and where you are going. but don’t focus on what you don’t have. focus on the achievements you have yet to make. be mindful and respectful of your balance and you will be rewarded with clarity.

leadership. comes in many forms. sometimes as inspiration, as guidance, sometimes out of demand. regardless of the form it takes, it’s important. everyone has the potential to lead. leadership is vital and it’s important.

leadership can be internal. as culture and as a human race we need connection and we need guidance. most of the time we just need a nudge to get moving. but leadership has no influence unless you’re open to it.

leadership comes in many forms. it can be historical, it can be indirect. leadership is important, inspiration is important. motivation comes from inspiration. inspiration is influenced by leadership. inspiration is vital and it’s important.

leadership can be symbolic. it comes in many forms, as affirmations, by force, by need. we need leadership, we need motivation. we are human and we need inspiration. we need connection. connection is vital, and it’s important.

leadership is good, even if it’s derived from the worst. we need connection, we need inspiration, we need motivation, and we will always need leadership.

leadership is a relationship we cannot deny, it’s part of our being. be a leader for yourself, be a leader for others. you have the potential.

leadership comes in many forms, from desire, from discipline. it has many levels and many faces. leadership is important, leadership is vital, leadership is human.

be historic, be a mentor for others. lead others and they will support you. lead yourself and others will follow you. lead yourself and you will indirectly inspire others.

leadership has many faces. look in the mirror and you’ll see the leader in you.

changes are a stimulus for emotions. they can be scary, they can be unnerving, they even can even be a waste a time. but what they are most is evolutionary. some refer to change as fate or destiny. some believe that every change is predictable and has been determined since the beginning of time. in contrast some also believe there is no order to change.

don’t fear change, it’s inevitable, it’s futile to resist. it’s evolutionary. change is what we make of it and life is full of change. life is what we make of it. you can’t stop change, but you can influence it.

we fear most when we are not confident. we fear most when we are unsure of the result. we fear because we are afraid of evolution. evolution is inevitable. change is inevitable. fear not what you don’t know, fear not the change that is inevitable.

change is not futile. adapt to change, think positively, think confidentially, think spiritually and you will influence change. embrace change and it will embrace you. it’s not always fun, but accept it and it will be the most postive influence in your life. change is good, even when it’s for the worse. change.

so this morning I decided to add a small feature to mSeesmic where you can download any of the videos you find in the timeline. while I was testing it, I found a bug that was working just fine the night before. so thankfully I was able to comment on the site and a handful of people responded to me, including Loic.

anyhow, I have a list (in my head) of changes I plan to introduce as time and energy allows me. here’s just a few… a multi-post mode for recording… user blocking/filtering… language filtering… inbox notification… following and follower interfaces …and some general improvements to make the application more efficient and appealing.

not to mention I will add new features as the API opens up. oh and Loic asked for demonstration of the app and was very pleased with what he saw.

for those new to the app… I realize I need to make a demonstration video at some point. including how to use it. but for now…

m.mSeesmic.net

enjoy. more updates will be coming soon.

Aside from that, I cut myself helping Danny from Microsoft setup, and I even filled in and lead a discussion on the schedule for someone who never showed up.

All-in-all it was a good event. I can’t wait for next year, and I already have ideas of how I’d like to help improve for 2009.

For those who have tried seesmic.com and know its lure… well I’ve made things worse. For a while I had the desire to have a mobile experience of seesmic on the go.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t carry my laptop and a webcam everywhere I go. Sometimes it’s not appropriate and even risky. So how else can I do this… get a smaller laptop? a OQO? or what about my phone?!

Why can’t I create new seesmic posts and watch the threads? I mean my phone can talk to the internet, it can play videos, heck it can even record video! So now I give you mSeesmic a fully bi-directional mobile seesmic application. It only works with Windows Mobile 5 or higher PDA touch/stylus phones. I recommend you have a good data plan… before using this app. It can be addicting especially if you already use seesmic on a daily basis.

Once you download the app, copy to it’s own folder. It will create a few folders to write out temporary files as you use your phone.

With great power comes responsibility!! I cannot stress this enough do not drive and mSeesmic! This app is still in alpha and you use it at your own risk. You also use it knowing it will use internet data on your phone.

If you any questions let me know. Like I said it’s still alpha. I plan to more features and as the API improves I will be able add new features to application. What’s next on my list is: language filtering, user blocking, inbox notification and a handful of other features not worth going into detail about.

Enjoy, and please let me know what happens and what you were doing if and when you encounter a bug.

I was recently attending Podcamp Philly 2008. On the last day of the event I attended a petcha kucha session.

for further explaination of what petcha kucha is… go here or here. For the lazy… basically it’s a presentation event… 20 presentations, 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide.

well I thought this was an interesting idea. it forces the presentation to be quick and poignant. now the session was about how you can use petcha kucha as an effective presentation style. it was interesting to see people randomly go up there and present any topic they choose.

well as this was occuring the person at the helm progressed the pre-done powerpoint slides manually with a watch. the programmer in me saw a need to fill so I did. in a coulple hours I built a simple application I call “pkShow” you can download a copy here and it will self-update as I make changes. it’s only available in windows.

I also added a few options myself that to up the level of difficulty / fun of petcha kutcha. there are a few modes to how the slide show presents pictures (sequential, random and shuffle). in additional to a splash screen option, a topic feature and visual indicators.

please check it out. let me know. you’re welcome to use it for non-commercial purposes. use at your owk risk… and so on.

enjoy.

what is it? orignally it was supposed to be a windows mobile version of seesmic. while I was waiting for seesmic to release a new version of their API I started thinking about a mobile video platform for a different purpose.

so instead of making seesmob a mobile version of seesmic, I decided to do something different. which still doesn’t answer the question… what is it?

seesmob is a experimental video platform with a cross-posting feature. currently I have built a windows mobile application that let’s me record video and upload it to my server, then convert the upload on-the-fly to FLV and make it available in my user profile as well on the public timeline of the webpage.

currently all that I has been developed is a little bit of the website and the bulk of the backend. I can film via the phone, upload and cross-post the video to other services. at the moment I only included YouTube and Seesmic. more in on the list… vimeo.. twitter… and etc.

If you are currently a windows mobile 5.x or higher user with a PDA style stylus/touch screen phone contact me and I will set you up with an account. I do need beta testers. however this is invite only because I have a limited amount of bandwidth.

if you have attempted to register it will not work. as I mentioned I have worked on basic parts of the website.

currently other off-hour projects have consumed my time. but fear not, I will get back to seesmob in the future.
